“People at Extremes” is not a typical painting category like still life or portraits. I use it to underscore the importance of times when I have been struck by another artist’s image of people who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. That other artist is usually a photographer who has put herself or himself at risk in order to be witness to and record the suffering and sacrifices of people across the world. I have never gotten as close as they have. I have learned better to see the world from them and have felt compelled to honor their work and the individuals they have captured, through my own drawing and painting.
I have written more about this in the Musings/Blog entries for 2/2/2015, 5/1/2015, 6/17/2015, 10/24/2015, and 2/18/2017.
